We spent most of our day today at the school observing classrooms and interviewing teachers. The group picture above is of students in grades 6, 7, 8 from the school that we interviewed today. We had a great time! I also visited a chemistry class where they were learning and experimenting about chemical change. Tonight I went to dinner with some friends I have made in past visits to Cairo and I ate grilled pigeon!! Tomorrow is our last day in the school here in Cairo. On Friday morning I will be traveling to Alexandria, Egypt for the second school visit. Stay tuned!

Are there tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes there? (Haileigh, Jennifer, Alexis and Jordan)
Why do they use donkeys to travel? (Anna)
How are the chemisty classes? (Sawyer)
Do they have fires there? (Breanna) AJ thinks so because it's so "hot and dry"
Do they have Arabic comic books there? (Faith)
Do they learn Spanish like we do in Egypt? (Aveon)

ReplyDeleteThe pigeon did taste a little bit like chicken, but there was not a lot of meat on the bones. So it sounds like eating three pigeons is a lot of food, but it was not!
Mrs. Horton's Class:
Haileigh, Jennifer, ALexis, and JOrdan: There are no hurricanes, tornadoes here. I do not think they have ever had an earthquake either. Sometimes it rains here, but usually not a lot of rain comes down. They often have sandstorms which make it hard to travel. In fact while I have been here, the schools out on the desert highway were delayed several hours because of a sandstorm!
Anna: Donkeys are the way many people get the things they have raised in their gardens into the market. Many of the farmers do not have cars and trucks and they use the donkeys to pull the carts. I am sure they use them in other ways out in their gardens.
Sawyer: The chemistry class was cool. They were combining chemicals to show a chemical change and were using test tubes and the bunsen burner (like a candle) to heat it up so that it would change to a different color.
Breana: If you are talking about house fires and things like that, I am sure that they do. I have seen fire trucks on the streets. Many of the families who live outside the city have fires in the yards to cook on. I have been to several restaurants where they cook the meat outside over a fire and where they bake their bread in an outside oven that is heated by a fire.
Faith: Believe it or not, there are Arabic comic books. They have exactly what you would find in any bookstore or WalMart, just in Arabic. They also have English ones as well as many people here do speak English.
Aveon: The schools here offer many other languages like French and German. Of course all students learn Arabic and English.
